Το κοινωνικό δράμα αναφέρεται στην ιστορία δυο ανθρώπων στο σύγχρονο Αμβούργο, με μόνο ίσως κοινό στοιχείο την τουρκική τους καταγωγή. Ο Τσάιτ, ένας σαραντάχρονος απεγνωσμένος αλκοολικός, καταλήγει σε ψυχιατρείο μετά από αυτοκαταστροφική πτώση με αυτοκίνητο σε έναν τοίχο. Εκεί γνωρίζει την Σιμπέλ, μια εικοσάχρονη όμορφη κοπέλα επίσης τουρκικής καταγωγής. Όπως και ο Τσάιτ βρίσκεται και αυτή εκεί επειδή έκανε απόπειρα αυτοκτονίας (έκοψε τις φλέβες τις), αφού δεν αντέχει την ζωή στην αυστηρά παραδοσιακή της οικογένεια. Με σκοπό να απελευθερωθεί από τους γονείς και τον αδερφό της, προτείνει στον Τσάιτ ψεύτικο γάμο για να μπορέσει να «ζήσει τη ζωή της». Ο Τσάιτ, ο οποίος όπως λεει ότι «έχει πετάξει» την μητρική του τουρκική γλώσσα και συντηρείται μαζεύοντας ποτήρια σε ένα κλαμπ, αρχικά διστάζει αλλά τελικά δέχεται. Μετά τον γάμο η Σιμπέλ απολαμβάνει την νεοκατακτηθείσα της ελευθερία στην νυχτερινή ζωή του Αμβούργου. Ο Τσάιτ αρχικά παρακολουθεί την ζωή της αδιάφορος. Σταδιακά όμως αναπτύσσονται τα αισθήματα μεταξύ τους με τραγικές συνέπειες.
