Η ταινία αφηγείται την αληθινή ιστορία του Τσέφρι Γουίγκατ, πρώην διευθυντικού στελέχους στο τμήμα ερευνών και ανάπτυξης μεγάλης καπνοβιομηχανίας, που αποφάσισε να εμφανιστεί στην ειδησεογραφική εκπομπή του CBS ?60 λεπτά?. Η συνείδησή του και μερικώς η παρακίνησή από τον παραγωγό της εκπομπής, Λόουελ Μπέρκμαν, τον ωθούν ανακαλύψει μυστικά σχετικά με τον εθισμό στη νικοτίνη που προκαλεί το κάπνισμα και την τακτική που ακολουθεί η πρώην εταιρεία του και κατ? επέκταση όλος ο κλάδος της καπνοβιομηχανίας.Οι πρωταγωνιστές της ιστορίας θα διαπιστώσουν με το σκληρότερο τρόπο ότι η αποκάλυψη την αλήθειας δεν είναι χωρίς κόστος.
