Ο πρώην εισαγγελέας Χάρβεϊ Ντεντ θεωρεί τον Μπάτμαν υπεύθυνο για την παραμόρφωση του προσώπου του. Έτσι κάτω από το εγκληματικό προσωπείο του Του Φέις, ο Ντεντ περνά στην άλλη πλευρά του Νόμου σπέρνοντας τον τρόμο και τον πανικό στους κατοίκους του Γκόθαμ Σίτι. Παράλληλα, ο Έντουαρντ Νίγκμα, ιδιοφυία στους ηλεκτρονικούς υπολογιστές και πρώην υπάλληλος του Μπρους Γουέιν, κατασκευάζει μια συσκευή που του δίνει τη δυνατότητα να «στραγγίζει» τη γνώση από τους εγκεφάλους των θυμάτων του. Ως σατανικός Ρίντλερ, ο Νίγκμα σκοπεύει να «εφαρμόσει» αυτή την συσκευή στο κεφάλι του Μπάτμαν! Όμως αυτή τη φορά ο τιμωρός του εγκλήματος έχει έναν βοηθό: το νεαρό ακροβάτη Ρόμπιν, που έχασε τους γονείς του κατά τη διάρκεια μιας εγκληματικής ενέργειας του Του Φέις. Οι δυο τους θα συνεργαστούν για να κατατροπώσουν τους αντιπάλους τους προτού είναι πολύ αργά.
